b-side Festival Launches Artist Open Calls for 2026 Programme on the Isle of Portland

b-side, the bold and site-responsive arts festival based on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, has announced two new Artist Open Calls for its 2026 programme, inviting artists and creative practitioners to propose ambitious new work rooted in place, people and ideas.

More than a traditional commissioning opportunity, the b-side 2026 Open Calls are framed as an invitation to co-create with local communities, explore new creative directions and develop work that resonates beyond conventional gallery settings.

Artists are invited to apply for one of two opportunities under the theme “That Other Place”:

That Other Place – A Portland Fair Commission, supporting the creation of new work for public presentation as part of the festival.

That Other Place – Research & Development Commission, offering time and support to explore ideas, methods and collaborations that may lead to future work.

b-side particularly welcomes proposals from artists whose practices are experimental, participatory or site-responsive, and strongly encourages applications that amplify underrepresented voices. Projects that engage with themes of place, ecology, identity and community, or that invite audiences to think, feel or actively participate, are especially encouraged.

Each commission offers up to £2,500 in funding, alongside project commissioning support and creative development opportunities. Selected artists will have the chance to work closely with Portland’s welcoming and curious communities while becoming part of b-side’s growing and distinctive festival programme.

The Open Calls are open to artists at all stages of their careers, working across any medium. The deadline for both opportunities is 9 February 2026.

By applying, artists will gain valuable time and space to develop new work, connect with diverse audiences across Dorset and beyond, and contribute to a festival known for its bold ideas and deep connection to place.
