Community call time on litter at Radipole Lake Nature Reserve
Volunteers from the Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project (WPMLP) can join local residents on Sunday 25 January 2026 for a community clean-up at Radipole Lake and Gardens, aiming to remove litter and protect the local environment. The campaign was part of the organisation’s wider mission to reduce pollution in natural spaces across the Dorset coast.
The event will see members of the public, environmental volunteers, and supporters gather in Radipole Gardens and around Radipole Lake, which forms a vital green and wildlife space in the town. Radipole Lake is a designated nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the RSPB, home to diverse birdlife and habitat areas cherished by locals and visitors alike.
Participants are invited to help collect litter, clear debris, and contribute to making the lakeside park and gardens cleaner and more welcoming for wildlife and the community. The clean-up was promoted as a chance to “show the local wildlife a little bit of love,” encouraging people to take an active role in caring for one of Weymouth’s cherished greenspaces.
Founded and run by local environmentalists, WPMLP focuses on community-based solutions to marine and coastal litter, tackling pollution from its source to its final destination. The group regularly organizes activities like beach and park clean-ups, education campaigns, and partnerships with local organisations to encourage sustainable behaviour.
Radipole Park and Gardens, maintained in part by Weymouth Town Council and volunteers, has seen significant redevelopment in recent years, enhancing its appeal as a recreational area for families, walkers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Organisers say events like this are essential for fostering community pride while protecting the environment. “Bringing people together to care for our shared spaces not only improves the look of our parks but also helps protect wildlife and prevents litter from entering waterways,” commented a volunteer from the project.
Clean-up participants are thanked for their efforts in helping to keep Weymouth’s green spaces clean and sustainable for future generations. Plans for further activities and events are expected to be announced later in the year by the Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project.
