Community Rallies to Save France Quarry as Development Looms

A much-loved wild green space in Easton is under threat of development, but a local community group is stepping in with an ambitious plan to secure its future.

France Quarry, a rare haven for people and wildlife on Portland, could soon be lost unless action is taken. Future Portland is working to purchase two acres of the site to protect it for long-term community use and nature conservation.

The goal is to raise £60,000 by the end of March 2026 — and momentum is already building. Thanks to strong local support, £22,000 has been raised so far, but there is still a significant way to go.

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect this special place,” said a spokesperson for Future Portland. “France Quarry has huge value — not just environmentally, but for wellbeing, recreation, and community connection.”

How You Can Help

Supporters can contribute in two ways:

1. Donate now

Donations are being sought to cover pre-purchase legal and survey costs, with a target of £5,000. Contributions can be made via the QR code on campaign posters or through the Crowdfunder page:

www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/france-quarry-portland-community-purchase

2. Make a pledge

Residents are also invited to pledge towards the purchase costs (target £55,000). No money is taken at this stage — pledges simply help demonstrate that there is enough community backing to proceed. If the project looks viable, pledgers will later be invited to convert their pledge into a donation, with no obligation if circumstances change.

Pledge forms can be returned by post to:

Future Portland c/o Island Community Action, Easton Shopping Centre, Easton, Portland, DT5 1EB

or by email to: xmas.futureportlandcbs@gmail.com
