Risks Highlighted as Key Cause of Workplace Fires
Businesses are being reminded of the importance of electrical fire safety after electrical equipment and appliances were identified as among the leading causes of fires in business premises in 2025.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service are urging employers to ensure they hold a valid Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) and carry out regular Electrical Equipment Testing (EET/PAT), alongside taking simple preventative steps to reduce risk in the workplace.
Key advice for businesses includes:
• Carrying out thorough risk assessments to identify potential electrical hazards
• Avoiding the charging of equipment in means of escape, such as corridors and stairwells
• Ensuring plugs are wired by a qualified electrician and encouraging staff to switch appliances off at the plug when not in use
• Using extension leads safely, never overloading or daisy-chaining them
• Regularly checking electrical equipment for damage and avoiding running cables under carpets or walkways
• Managing lithium-ion battery risks by using approved chargers only, never charging damaged batteries, and avoiding charging overnight or near combustible materials
Fire services say proactive electrical safety checks can significantly reduce the risk of fire, helping to protect people, property and business continuity.
