Essential Ferry Bridge Repairs Begin with Pontoons Installed Beneath Structure

Essential Ferry Bridge Repairs Begin with Pontoons Installed Beneath Structure
Essential repair work begins tomorrow (Monday 19 January) on Ferry Bridge, the key transport link between Portland and Weymouth, with pontoons now in place beneath the structure to support the works.
After more than 40 years in service, the bridge requires vital maintenance to ensure its long-term sustainability. A floating pontoon platform has been installed beneath the bridge to allow contractors safe access to carry out repairs to the underside of the structure and its supporting columns.
Most of the work will take place below deck level and will not be visible to motorists crossing the bridge.
To facilitate the repairs, traffic management will be in place from Monday 19 January to Sunday 1 March, including:
• One lane closed with 24-hour two-way traffic lights
• Pedestrian and cyclist access maintained throughout
• No abnormal or heavy loads permitted
While the main programme of works is due to conclude by 1 March, there may be short periods of additional traffic management afterwards, along with two brief overnight closures scheduled for April.
Road users are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and continue to support local businesses during the works.
Further details about the project are available on the Dorset Council website.
