Met Office Extends Yellow Weather Warning for Snow and Ice Across South West England

The Met Office has amended its Yellow Weather Warning for snow and ice, expanding the number of areas now considered at risk.

The warning is valid from 00:00 until 12:00 (midday) on Friday 2 January, and covers a wide stretch of South West England.

Areas affected include:

  • Bath and North East Somerset
  • Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole
  • Bristol
  • Dorset
  • Gloucestershire
  • North Somerset
  • Somerset
  • South Gloucestershire
  • Swindon
  • Wiltshire

According to the Met Office, an area of sleet and snow is expected to move south-eastwards across parts of England and Wales during the early hours of Friday. The wintry conditions are likely to last for around two to three hours in any one location.

Where snow falls, 1–2cm is expected fairly widely, with up to 5cm possible in a few isolated spots. As the sleet and snow clears, icy patches are expected to form quickly, particularly on untreated roads and pavements.

Members of the public are being advised to take extra care if travelling, especially during the morning hours. Those relying on buses or trains are urged to check the latest updates directly with transport providers before setting out.

The warning has been amended due to a wider geographical area now being at risk.

Residents are encouraged to stay aware of local conditions and follow official advice to stay safe.
