Motorcyclist Clocked at 72mph in 30 Zone Faces Court After Weymouth Stop
A motorcyclist has been reported to the Magistrates’ Court after being caught travelling at nearly two-and-a-half times the speed limit on Preston Road, Weymouth.
Officers from the No Excuse Team stopped the rider after recording a speed of 72mph in a 30mph limit, during wet weather conditions. When spoken to, the rider told officers they were trying to get home before the rain worsened.
Due to the excessive speed, officers confirmed that no roadside disposal options were available. The matter has now been referred to the Magistrates’ Court, where the rider is likely to face a driving ban and a significant fine.
Police highlighted the increased dangers of riding in poor weather, warning that rain significantly reduces tyre grip, lengthens stopping distances and impairs visibility.
“At this speed, any loss of control could have resulted in serious or fatal consequences,” an officer said. “Not only for the rider, but for other road users as well.”
Officers also urged road users to consider the wider impact of speeding offences, noting that losing a licence can severely affect daily life, including commuting to work, social activities and family responsibilities.
Police reiterated that speed limits exist for a reason and encouraged all drivers and riders to slow down, particularly in adverse conditions.
