Police Investigate Wildlife Crime in Weymouth Cemetery

Police are investigating an incident of wildlife crime after youths were seen shooting animals in Weymouth Cemetery on Tuesday evening.

At approximately 5.30pm, an off-duty police officer contacted the local neighbourhood policing team after witnessing a group of youths using a catapult to target wildlife in trees within the cemetery, off Abbotsbury Road.

Officers attended the scene alongside the off-duty officer and located two youths. While on site, officers witnessed one of the youths strike a pigeon roosting in a tree. Upon becoming aware of police presence, both suspects fled the area.

Following a short foot chase, officers detained one suspect near the marshland. A catapult believed to have been used in the offence was later recovered from the ground close to where the youths ran off.

Enquiries are ongoing, and officers are working to identify all those involved. Police have confirmed that they will be pursuing prosecution where appropriate.

A spokesperson said:

“Harming animals is needlessly cruel and will not be tolerated. We take wildlife crime seriously and will take action against those responsible.”

Anyone with information relating to the incident is urged to contact police.
