Protest Underway on Portland as Residents Demonstrate Against Incinerator Proposal
A large protest is taking place on the Isle of Portland this afternoon, with residents and campaigners gathering to oppose plans for a waste incinerator at Portland Port.
Demonstrators have assembled in the town and are marching towards the port area, holding placards and chanting slogans calling for the proposal to be scrapped. Organisers say the protest is peaceful and family-friendly, with people of all ages taking part.
The protest has been organised by local campaigners who argue the incinerator could have negative impacts on air quality, public health, traffic levels, and the local environment. Many attending say they are concerned about the proximity of the proposed site to homes, schools, and the surrounding coastline.
Police are present to monitor the demonstration and manage traffic, but there have been no reports of disorder. Some temporary disruption to roads on the island is expected while the march is ongoing.
Opponents of the incinerator say today’s turnout shows the strength of local feeling on the issue and insist the campaign will continue. Supporters of the project have previously stated it would contribute to waste management and energy generation, but campaigners argue alternative solutions should be prioritised.
The protest is continuing at the time of writing, with speeches expected once marchers reach the port entrance.
