Tree Removal Works Underway at North Quay to Protect Retaining Wall
Specialist arborists are removing several large trees from a steep bank at the rear of North Quay car park in Weymouth after their roots were found to be pushing out a retaining wall.
The work is being carried out with careful consideration for local wildlife, as a badger sett is located nearby. To minimise disturbance, the team has switched to quieter electric chainsaws, significantly reducing noise levels during operations.
Rather than allowing branches to fall freely, arborists have installed a zip-line system to lower sections safely from the slope. Once the tree canopies have been fully removed, an 80-tonne crane will be brought in to lift out the remaining trunks in a controlled and safe manner.
The tree removal forms part of a longer-term plan to reinstate the historic Chapelhay Gardens for public use. Following the completion of the works, a landscape architect will begin preparing draft designs for the future restoration of the site.
