Weymouth Invited to Help Shape the Future of Climate Action at Sea
Weymouth, Dorset — What if Weymouth became a national leader in tackling climate change? Local residents are being invited to take part in a new community conversation that could help shape how cutting-edge climate research is discussed and understood—both locally and beyond.
Sense about Science, in partnership with the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, is hosting a community engagement event focused on emerging research into removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the sea. The aim is not to promote a finished solution, but to work with the public to develop clear, balanced and trustworthy ways of talking about this complex area of climate science.
Marine carbon dioxide removal is an area of growing scientific interest, exploring whether the ocean—already a major carbon sink—could play a greater role in addressing climate change. However, researchers stress that public understanding and scrutiny are essential as the science develops. This event puts local voices at the centre of that discussion.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet scientists, tour an active research site, and take part in guided conversations about the potential, limits and concerns surrounding ocean-based CO₂ removal. The discussions will directly inform how researchers, institutions and policymakers communicate about this work in the future.
The event also offers free access to SEA LIFE Weymouth, refreshments throughout the day, and an honorarium in recognition of participants’ time and input.
Organisers say no scientific background is required—only curiosity and a willingness to engage. They are particularly keen to hear from people with strong connections to Weymouth and the surrounding coastline, reflecting the town’s long relationship with the sea.
By bringing together residents, researchers and communicators, the organisers hope Weymouth can play a leading role in setting the tone for open, responsible conversations about climate innovation—ensuring that future decisions are informed not just by data, but by public values and local perspectives.
