Groundwater Flood Risk at Historic Highs Across Dorset

Dorset Council is urging residents and businesses to check whether they are in an affected area as groundwater levels across Dorset reach historic highs.
Unlike surface flooding, groundwater flooding rises slowly through the ground and can appear days after heavy rainfall, making early preparation essential.
Dorset Council is advising people in at-risk areas to:
✔️ Sign up for flood warnings – currently only one in three at-risk properties is registered
✔️ Ensure pumps are working and ready to help manage rising water levels
✔️ Never drive through floodwater or ignore road closure signs
✔️ Look out for vulnerable neighbours who may need support
The Environment Agency – South and South West currently has widespread groundwater flood warnings in place. High groundwater levels can also increase the risk of sewage contamination, and residents are encouraged to report concerns and seek safety advice from Wessex Water.
Dorset Council is working with partner agencies to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
