Temporary Removal of Traffic Lights on Portland Beach Road

The temporary traffic lights on Portland Beach Road were removed today due to adverse weather conditions that made working on the nearby bridge unsafe. Local authorities had anticipated that the ongoing maintenance work would require the lights to be operational throughout the day, but heavy rain and strong winds prompted a swift change in plans.

Town officials announced that the traffic lights would be reinstated this evening, ensuring that traffic flow remains safe and orderly. Drivers are advised to exercise caution when navigating the area until the lights are back in place.

A spokesperson said“We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to improve the infrastructure. The lights will be operational again by tonight, ensuring a smooth transition for commuters.”

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay updated on local traffic advisories as the weather continues to change.

Ferrybridge works update:

Due to high winds and heavy rain, the traffic lights on Ferrybridge have been temporarily switched off. This is because the works on the bridge cannot take place safely during these poor conditions. The lights are expected to be switched on later today. We were able to switch the lights off as the main repair works to the concrete have not started yet (once those works are underway, the lights will remain on whatever the weather conditions).

” We’d like to thank everyone who contacted us about the delays caused by the traffic lights on the first day of works. We are working with our contractors to look at how we can mitigate this.

As a result, yesterday we adjusted the timings of the lights to better reflect traffic patterns during peak periods, for example, providing longer green phases for vehicles leaving Portland in the morning and those returning in the afternoon.

We’ll continue to monitor and make any further adjustments as necessary. ”
