Tool Theft Cases Rise in Dorset: Police Publish New Data
Dorset, UK — New figures released by Dorset Police under the Freedom of Information Act show the force has recorded a significant number of tool theft reports over the past year, with only a small proportion of stolen tools recovered. The data covers the period from 1 December 2024 through 1 December 2025.
According to police records, there were 122 reported occurrences of tool theft involving hand tools and power tools during this period. Of those, only seven thefts resulted in recovery of the stolen tools — and in many cases the recovery occurred through police action.
The total monetary value of tools recovered by the force was recorded at approximately £700, though only one of the stolen tool recoveries included a stated value estimate. Police note that detailed value information is not always logged during crime recording.
The data also highlights that tools were stolen from a range of locations, including vehicles, construction sites, and residential premises. However, there is limited detail in the disclosure on exactly how many thefts occurred at each type of location.
Dorset Police emphasise that information such as the occupations of victims is not always recorded — meaning it isn’t possible to isolate how many of the thefts involved tradespeople or professional tool users. Nonetheless, victim occupation categories present in the data include builders, electricians, plumbers, and other manual trades.
In commenting on the release, a police spokesperson said these figures help the force monitor crime trends and support community awareness about tool theft, which remains a common target for offenders due to the portable and valuable nature of equipment.
