Volunteer Wanted: RNLI Seeks Launch Authority for Weymouth Lifeboat Station

The RNLI is calling on the local community to support its life-saving work at sea, as Weymouth Lifeboat Station looks to recruit an additional Volunteer Launch Authority.

This vital, part-time, land-based role plays a crucial part in the RNLI’s emergency response. Launch Authorities are responsible for coordinating lifeboat launches from shore, working closely with HM Coastguard and the Weymouth Lifeboat Crew when incidents occur at sea.

As part of a small, trusted team, the successful volunteer will respond to a pager on a rotating rota, helping to make calm, clear decisions when every second counts. The role combines elements of remote or home working, attendance at the lifeboat station when required, and participation in regular operational meetings, training sessions and team events.

Who should apply?

The role would suit someone who:

• Lives within pager range and within 20 minutes’ travel time of the lifeboat station

• Remains calm under pressure and communicates clearly

• Feels confident making decisions when it matters most

• Has good local knowledge of the Dorset coastline, sea conditions and geography

A maritime or seafaring background is desirable, but no previous RNLI experience is required, as full training and ongoing support will be provided.

Time commitment

This is a voluntary position requiring availability to respond to pager calls 24/7 for several days at a time, on a flexible, agreed rota shared with other Launch Authorities. Commitment varies, and team members work together to provide cover whenever possible.
