Yellow warning for heavy rain
Residents in Weymouth and Portland are being urged to take extra care today after a Yellow weather warning for rain was issued, covering much of Dorset and the wider South West.
According to the Met Office, periods of rain and heavy showers are expected throughout the day, increasing the risk of surface water flooding in some areas. The warning is in effect from early this morning until late tonight.
Rain moving in from the south overnight is forecast to become heavy and persistent at times, particularly during the morning. Although there may be a brief break in rainfall for some, further organised and at times heavy rain is expected to arrive later in the day, again affecting the same areas.
Between 10 and 20 millimetres of rain is expected to fall widely by the end of the day, with some localised areas potentially seeing more than 30 millimetres. With ground conditions already saturated, this raises the likelihood of water collecting on roads and low-lying areas.
Drivers in Weymouth and Portland should be prepared for difficult conditions, including spray, flowing water and possible flooded roads, which could lead to longer journey times. Bus and train services may also experience delays, while brief interruptions to power supplies and other services are possible. Flooding of a small number of homes and businesses cannot be ruled out.
The Met Office advises residents to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and, if so, consider preparing a basic flood plan and emergency kit. Those travelling are encouraged to check road conditions and public transport updates before setting off, and to allow extra time for journeys.
People are also reminded to be prepared for possible power cuts by having torches, spare batteries and a charged mobile phone power pack ready. Weather warnings can change quickly, so staying up to date with the latest local forecast is recommended.
The Yellow warning reflects a medium likelihood of disruption but a generally low overall impact. Even so, residents are advised to remain cautious and aware of changing conditions throughout the day.
